Public Service Organizations

"Enter to grow in wisdom. Depart to serve better thy country and mankind." -- Charles William Eliot

It is always awe-inspiring to see people throughout the country come together to help others struck down by tragedy. The same attention to service is carried out everyday by soldiers, policemen and firefighters. It is inspiring to watch as people overcome obstacles to achieve heights they never thought were attainable.

For over two hundred years, men and women of this great country have heeded the call to service when the country needed them most. During their tour of duty many have given the ultimate sacrifice...their lives. Today's all-volunteer force continues the same tradition of service as their forebears. Organizations such as the Peace Corps and AmericCorps are also dedicated to helping others and are giving back to our nation through public service. It is this act of service that highlights the very best in people.

As Memorial Day approaches there is an effort underway called the "National Moment of Remembrance." On May 29, at 3:00 p.m. (local time) all Americans are being asked to pause and reflect on what Memorial Day means to them. It is time to come together and realize that freedom is not free and to honor those who have given their lives during service to their country.

Suggested ways to participate:

  • Pause for one minute at 3:00pm (local time).
  • Public servants in official vehicles turn your headlights on if you are driving.
  • Pass out leaflets. (You can use the poster download to print out leaflets.)
  • Inform people about the "National Moment of Remembrance."
