As part of the Clinton Administration's broad-based effort to support Africa's integration into the global economy, Secretary Rodney Slater has launched the Transportation Initiative and Partnership with Africa under the theme: "Transportation: The Tie that Binds." The Secretary's visionary message is that the development of safe and efficient transportation systems is vital both to Africa's continued economic development and to the well-being of its communities and people.

The Department of Transportation is currently involved in Africa in a wide range of activities that cover all modes of transportation, from negotiating civil aviation agreements, to sharing highway-related technology and expertise, to providing training to maritime security personnel.

In addition, President Clinton will announce on his trip a DOT-led Aviation Initiative for Africa. The purpose of this initiative is to work in partnership with African nations to improve their air navigation services, aviation safety oversight, and airport security so that Africa's skies are sage for all travelers.
