CHART: Median Household Income by Race and Hispanic Origin: 1972 to 1998

Household Income

Between 1997 and 1998, real median household income increased 3.5 percent to $38,885, the highest median household income level ever recorded. Among the racial groups, non-Hispanic Whites were the only group to have a significant increase in their real median household income between 1997 and 1998--3.0 percent. Hispanic households (who may be of any race) had a 4.8 percent increase in real median income between 1997 and 1998 (not statistically different from the percent increase for non-Hispanic Whites).

CHART: Poverty Rates

Poverty

The poverty rate for the United States dropped to 12.7 percent in 1998, down from 13.3 percent in 1997. The number of poor dropped significantly also, to 34.5 million people, down from 35.6 million in 1997. *The percentage point change from 1997 to 1998 was -0.5. As a result of rounding, this difference appears to be slightly lower than the difference in the reported rates.
