Asian Affairs
Special Assistant to
the President and Senior Director
The Asian Affairs Office of the National Security Council advises and
assists the President and the National Security Advisor on all aspects
of U.S. foreign policy with respect to the Asia-Pacific region, including
Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia (including Indochina) and Oceania.
The U.S. presence has been essential to maintaining the peace and
security that has enabled most nations in the Asia-Pacific region
to build thriving economies.
In addition to focusing on U.S. policy for the many bilateral
relationships in the region, the Asian Affairs Office also advises
the President on other issues such as regional security and institutions
(APEC, the ASEAN Regional Forum), the North Korean nuclear problem
(together with the Nonproliferation Directorate), and the promotion
of human rights and democracy in the region.
