A modern and cosmopolitan city, Tel Aviv is truly a "City That Never Sleeps." Coffee is served in chic cafes on the beach and patrons dine at restraint featuring haute cuisine. Shopping is the feature in the picturesque souk and at the ultra-modern Dizengoff center. Other sights include the state-of-the-art Diaspora museum, the bustling Canal Market, and the home of the world famous Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. The city of Jaffa, now a part of Tel Aviv, has an ancient air but nevertheless hosts some of Israel's most modern artists. Any visit to Tel Aviv is not complete without a visit to Independence Hall, where David Ben Gurion declared Israel's statehood on May 14, 1948.
