Upon his arrival in China, President Clinton will be welcomed by the Chinese people with a colorful arrival ceremony portraying this country's majestic history, much of which centered around the ancient city of Xian. The President and First Lady will proceed down historic Imperial Road, followed by Chinese women wearing costumes of the Tang Dynasty, towards a ceremonial stage, where the Mayor of Xian will present the President with the key to the city.

A traditional dance will follow, after which the President will deliver brief remarks to the people of Xian. The ceremony ends with the President and First Lady signing the guest book, viewing Chinese children demonstrating calligraphy, for which Xian is famous, and listening to a performance of Tang Dynasty music.
