Introduction by ADELE SIMMONS
Thank you, Brian. Peter Raven is director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and a former
MacArthur Foundation fellow. He is home secretary of the National Academy of Sciences
and a member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. In the
interest of saving trees, Peter's office does not routinely circulate the list of 450 scientific
articles he has written. Peter's passions are the plant collections and the animals of the
world. For example, he has encouraged the MacArthur Foundation to help to preserve the
botanical collections in St. Petersburg. Peter is in every sense a citizen of the world. It is a
pleasure to welcome him here today.
