THE NEP AND NATIONAL GOALS
The NEP responds to the guidelines issued by the Administration's Officeof Management and Budget and Office of Science and Technology Policy, whichcall for closer linkages between scientific research and broad nationalgoals. Basic research dealing with the scientific, engineering, and socioeconomicaspects of earthquakes is a fundamental part of the national strategy. Basicresearch provides a close link to the training of the next generation ofscientists, engineers, and practitioners responsible for the national programin the future. The NEP also responds to the Administration's science andtechnology management principle that industry play a partnership role inestablishing priorities for federal programs.
