Goal #1 To provide access to benefits payable under the Social Security Act.
Objective #1

Expedite and facilitate the processing and payment of all disability claims, including those filed based on a presumptive diagnosis of HIV disease.

Action Steps
  1. Process HIV claims under high priority status using procedures for processing claims where there is an indication of terminal illness.
  2. Revise as necessary SSA's adjudicative policies based on dynamic nature of HIV disease.
  3. Expedite claims processing by streamlining disability claims procedures and help AIDS service providers assist clients applying for SSA-DI and SSI.

Goal #2 To provide information regarding benefits payable under the Social Security Act.
Objective #1

Provide information to people living with AIDS (PWAs) and to the medical community regarding eligibility requirements and changes in SSA programs as they apply to PWAs.

Action Steps
  1. Inform PWAs about disability programs and eligibility requirements through mass mailings, electronic bulletin boards and community based organizations.
  2. Participate and exhibit at national conventions.
  3. Train on disability programs.
  4. Coordinate public information campaigns among Federal agencies and non-governmental organizations to disseminate information to more people more rapidly.
