FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- Sandra L. Thurman, Director
of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, issued the following
statement on the death of Dr. Jonathan Mann:
The AIDS community, the United States, and the world at large, has suffered
a great loss in the tragic death of Dr. Jonathan Mann, and his wife Dr.
Mary-Lou Clements. For nearly two decades, Jonathan has provided leadership
and vision to our global battle against AIDS. His compassion, dedication,
and tireless commitment will be sorely missed. While Jonathan's
special contribution is irreplaceable, his legacy inspires us all to redouble
our efforts to keep science and humanity in the forefront of our response
to the AIDS pandemic. Mary-Lou's
years of dedicated commitment to prevention and the development of vaccines
was extraordinary. My heart and thoughts are with their family.
